Non-Cyber Professionals Get Foundational Training in Cyber Security at New Singapore Centre

SINGAPORE – Engineers aspiring to gain experience in the cyber-security sector can look forward to an introductory Internet of Things (IoT) course tailored to members of The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES).

Foundational Cyber-Security Training for Non-Cyber Professionals

A new course tailored for The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) members offers introductory Internet of Things (IoT) training. Over the two-day course, participants will learn how to safeguard internet-enabled home appliances and networks using device authentication, encryption protocols, and vulnerability management.

Launch of the CyberSG Talent, Innovation and Growth (TIG) Collaboration Centre

The CyberSG TIG Collaboration Centre was officially launched on July 15 to nurture potential talent in the cyber-security sector. This initiative is a collaboration between the IES and Temasek Polytechnic. It is supported by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA).

Goals and Funding for Cyber-Security Growth

Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Janil Puthucheary highlighted the centre’s critical role in increasing the talent pipeline and professionalising the workforce. The centre aims to equip non-cyber professionals with foundational cyber knowledge. It is backed by $20 million in funding from the Government and NUS for its activities over the next two years.

Rapid Growth of Singapore’s Cyber-Security Workforce

Singapore’s cyber-security workforce has proliferated from 4,000 in 2016 to 12,000 in 2022. Currently, academic institutions in Singapore offer more than 20 cyber-related tertiary-level courses. The new IoT course aims to provide foundational cyber-security training to non-cyber-security professionals.

Engaging Youth in Cyber Security

The centre organised Youth Cyber Exploration Programme boot camps, attracting 250 secondary school students. These boot camps introduced students to the basics of cyber security, such as building a firewall, to spark their interest in the field.

Support for Cyber-Security Companies

The centre is launching the CyberBoost Catalyse programme in collaboration with British-based innovation company Plexal to support cyber-security companies. Participating companies will have access to workshops and mentoring for growth strategies and securing investment opportunities. Additionally, NUS signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Plexal and local investor SGInnovate to support early-stage start-ups with capital and talent.

CyberSG TIG Plan for Innovation

The CyberSG TIG plan includes a bi-annual call for innovative cyber-security solutions. Since 2021, the CSA’s Cybersecurity Co-Innovation and Development Fund has provided funding of up to $1 million for chosen solutions. This scheme has supported over 30 companies in developing solutions in areas such as cloud security, artificial intelligence for cyber security, and privacy-enhancing technologies.
